Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Rescue teams continued their race against time on Saturday as the death toll from the devastating Kolkata warehouse collapse in the Taratala area rose to 15, with authorities fearing that more people could still be trapped beneath the rubble. The tragedy unfolded on June 24, when a three-storey warehouse under construction suddenly collapsed, burying dozens of workers under concrete slabs, steel beams and construction debris. Three days later, emergency responders remain at the site, carrying out an intensive search despite challenging weather conditions.
33 Rescued, Several Remain Critical
According to hospital and disaster management officials, 33 people have been rescued alive and admitted to various hospitals across Kolkata. Several of the injured continue to be in critical condition.
Most of those killed were construction workers and warehouse staff who were inside the building when the structure gave way. Authorities are still working to establish the identities of some victims, while anxious family members continue to wait for updates outside hospitals and the accident site.
Kolkata Warehouse Collapse: Emotional Scenes at the Tragedy Site
Beyond the rising casualty figures, the human cost of the disaster has deeply affected the city. A video showing a grieving sister breaking down after learning that her brother was among the deceased has gone viral on social media, drawing widespread sympathy. Similar scenes have unfolded throughout the rescue operation, with families desperately searching for missing relatives and hoping for news from rescue personnel.
Massive Multi-Agency Rescue Operation
The rescue operation has entered its third consecutive day, involving personnel from the Kolkata Police, Fire and Emergency Services, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Management authorities and the Indian Army.
Heavy cranes, hydraulic cutters, sniffer dogs and specialised search equipment are being used to remove massive concrete slabs without triggering further collapse. Officials said intermittent rainfall has slowed progress at times but has not interrupted the operation.
Authorities have reiterated that rescue efforts will continue until every section of the collapsed structure has been thoroughly searched.
SIT Formed, Construction Under Scanner
The Kolkata Police Detective Department has launched a detailed investigation into the incident, while a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to determine the cause of the collapse.
Investigators are examining whether the warehouse complied with approved building plans, engineering standards and mandatory safety regulations. Construction permits, structural drawings, material quality reports and site supervision records are all being scrutinised.
Police have already arrested several individuals linked to the construction and operation of the warehouse. Investigators are also looking into allegations of negligence, safety violations and possible procedural irregularities that may have contributed to the collapse.
Questions Over Construction Safety at the Kolkata Warehouse Collapse
The Taratala warehouse collapse has once again raised concerns over construction safety standards and regulatory oversight in rapidly developing urban areas.
Experts note that incidents involving under-construction buildings often point to multiple failures—including structural design flaws, inadequate quality control, poor supervision or non-compliance with safety protocols. The findings of the SIT are expected to determine whether any of these factors played a role in Wednesday’s tragedy.
Authorities Promise Strict Action
State authorities have assured that those found responsible will face the strictest legal action once the investigation is completed.
For now, however, the priority remains the rescue operation. As excavators continue clearing tonnes of debris and rescue workers search every accessible section of the site, families of the missing continue to wait, hoping for answers in one of Kolkata’s deadliest construction disasters in recent years.
