Renowned educator, climate activist, and innovator Sonam Wangchuk has entered the 17th day of his indefinite hunger strike, with doctors and supporters expressing serious concern over his rapidly deteriorating health. Reports indicate that Wangchuk has lost approximately 8.5 kilograms, is suffering from muscle loss, and has dangerously low blood sugar and blood pressure, prompting renewed appeals for him to end the fast.

Wangchuk is staging the hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, demanding accountability over alleged irregularities in national entrance examinations, including NEET, and calling for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. According to organisers, he has experienced severe weight loss, muscle wasting, low blood glucose levels, and falling blood pressure.Despite repeated requests from doctors and well-wishers, Wangchuk has reportedly refused to end the fast, insisting that meaningful action from the government is necessary before he considers breaking his hunger strike.

Opposition Leaders Urge Him to End the Fast

As concerns over his health intensify, several Opposition leaders have appealed to Wangchuk to prioritise his life and health while continuing the campaign through democratic means. They have simultaneously urged the Central Government to open a dialogue with the activist and address the issues raised by the protesters

Celebrities Extend Support

The protest has also drawn support from prominent personalities in the film industry. Veteran actors Zeenat Aman, Naseeruddin Shah, Abhay Deol, and Omi Vaidya have publicly appealed to the government to engage in discussions with Wangchuk and respond to his concerns.Omi Vaidya, who portrayed Chatur in 3 Idiots, referred to Wangchuk as the “real-life Phunsukh Wangdu” and urged citizens to support him during what he described as a critical moment.
