Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!A devastating fire at the South 24-Parganas’ new administrative building in Alipore, Kolkata, has resulted in the destruction of approximately 4000 EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines), sparking intense political debate and raising serious questions about fire safety protocols in government facilities. The incident, which occurred last Wednesday, has prompted a comprehensive investigation into its origins and the unusual pattern of its spread .
Unusual Fire Progression that Destroys 4000 EVMs Fuels Sabotage Theories:
The blaze, first reported around 9:40 AM, originated on the third floor of the nine-storey building, specifically within the Zilla Parishad’s karmadhayaksha office . What has particularly baffled investigators and fueled speculation is the fire’s progression: it reportedly bypassed the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors entirely, leaping directly to engulf the seventh, eighth, and ninth levels . Kaushik Chowdhury, the Minister of State for Fire and Emergency Services, publicly stated, “It does not appear to be a normal fire. It is still not clear how the fire reached the seventh and eighth floors without affecting the fourth, fifth and sixth floors.” This anomalous spread has led to calls for a thorough forensic examination to ascertain whether the fire was accidental or a deliberate act of sabotage.

Critical Lapses in Fire Safety:
The incident has starkly highlighted significant deficiencies in the building’s fire safety infrastructure. Despite the presence of wall-fitted fire extinguishers and sprinklers on certain floors, reports indicate that none were operational during the emergency . Furthermore, a critical height barrier at the building’s entrance severely impeded firefighting efforts, preventing mechanical ladders from accessing the upper floors. This forced the deployment of 17 fire tenders and the Kolkata Police Disaster Management Group to battle the inferno for nearly five hours, primarily relying on water from a nearby pump house . The lack of a clear Fire NOC (No Objection Certificate) for the building is also under scrutiny, suggesting potential administrative oversight.
Destroyed 4000 EVMs and Political Ramifications:
The loss of 4000 EVMs, which were utilized in 10 constituencies during the recent West Bengal Assembly elections, carries substantial implications. These machines are crucial for ensuring the integrity and efficiency of the democratic process, and Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines mandate their preservation for at least 45 days post-election results to address any legal challenges . Their destruction not only represents a significant financial burden but also raises concerns about the availability of machines for future electoral exercises and, more critically, the erosion of public trust in the electoral system. The South 24 Parganas district, a known stronghold of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), adds a layer of political sensitivity to the incident.
Opposition leaders have been quick to voice their suspicions. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar and BJP leader Rakesh Singh have openly suggested the possibility of sabotage, alleging a “planned act” to destroy evidence . While an FIR has been registered by the Additional District Magistrate at Alipore Police Station, and a forensic investigation is underway, the political discourse surrounding the incident is intensifying.
