Bangla Shasya Bima: West Bengal’s Own Crop Cover and Where It Stands After PMFBY
What the state crop scheme paid for, why West Bengal returned to the national PMFBY from Kharif 2026, and how a farmer should check which cover applies.
01What the Bangla Shasya Bima (Crop Insurance) Was
West Bengal left the central Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) from Kharif 2019 and ran its own crop scheme, called Bangla Shasya Bima in the CoreSignal list (and Bangla Fasal Bima in some news reports). The state paid the whole premium. In June 2024 the state announced about ₹293 crore to roughly 2.10 lakh farmers for rabi losses. A Ministry of Agriculture note describes it as a non-insurance crop relief scheme.
02West Bengal Back in PMFBY
The Ministry of Agriculture’s August 2026 note says West Bengal rejoined PMFBY from Kharif 2026. Farmers pay up to 2% of the sum insured for Kharif food grains and oilseeds, 1.5% for rabi and 5% for commercial and horticultural crops, and the balance is shared between the Centre and the state. Reports say more than 32 lakh Bengal farmers opted in for Kharif 2026 and that the registration date was extended at the state’s request.
03Is Bangla Shasya Bima Still Running?
A report also said the state proposed to pay the farmers’ share of the PMFBY premium. This was a proposal, with no confirmed order.
04What a Farmer Should Do
- Enrol under PMFBY through the bank, a primary agricultural cooperative society, a Common Service Centre, the block agriculture office or pmfby.gov.in. See the PMFBY page for the claim steps and the 72-hour rule.
- Keep the policy receipt and report localised losses within 72 hours.
- Ask the block agriculture office whether any state relief for crop damage applies in the same season.
