Live Updates
Saturday, October 10: Result stands, political debate continues
The Rejinagar bypoll result now sits within a larger national argument over the Election Commission’s neutrality. INDIA bloc leaders marched towards Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday over their demand for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, with more than 20,000 police and paramilitary personnel deployed across central Delhi. No report has linked the CEC to the Rejinagar outcome, and no complaint about the counting itself has been reported.
6:24 pm, October 9: Sarkar declared winner
The BJP’s Shankharavh Sarkar finished with 1,29,914 votes, as Coresignal confirmed. Azad of the AJUP polled 54,098, which left a margin of 75,816.
2:03 pm: Sarkar ahead by 37,506 after seven of 15 rounds
The BJP candidate held 61,386 votes to Azad’s 23,880. Congress’s Kafi had 2,893 and the Mamata All India Trinamool Congress’s Chowdhury 2,862. In neighbouring Nandigram, the BJP’s Hasi Rani Rath led by 97,522 votes after 12 of 15 rounds.
1:13 pm: Lead crosses 34,000
After the fifth round, Sarkar’s advantage stood at 34,501 votes, and the BJP was on course for a win.
11:21 am: Round one goes to the BJP
Sarkar opened an 11,033-vote lead after the first EVM round, according to ECI trends relayed by NewsX. Kafi held second place at this stage, with Azad third.
10:32 am: Trend in a Muslim-majority seat draws attention
The BJP’s lead over Congress was about 6,000 votes. The same live blog noted that Rejinagar is a minority-dominated constituency, with Muslims accounting for more than 65 per cent of voters, which made the early trend notable.
9:48 am: Early BJP lead as postal ballots are counted
Sarkar went ahead in the first trends while postal ballots were still being tallied.
8:00 am: Counting begins
Counting started with postal ballots and electronically transmitted postal ballots, followed by EVM votes across 15 rounds in two halls. The bypoll was the BJP’s first electoral test since it came to power in May. The result cannot affect the state government, since the party won 207 of 294 seats in the Assembly election.
Earlier: What Led to Counting Day
October 7: AJUP chief Humayun Kabir broke down before the media and threatened to quit active politics, accusing the police and administration of favouring the BJP. The Trinamool Congress has long alleged that he split Muslim votes to help the BJP, a charge he rejects.
October 6, polling day: Turnout reached 78.42 per cent by 5 pm in a largely peaceful vote. Kabir was arrested after a confrontation with police at his party office, and the Election Commission sought a report on the arrest. Kafi staged a sit-in outside Rejinagar police station and demanded fresh polling.
Why the Rejinagar seat was vacant: Humayun Kabir won both Rejinagar and Nowda in the 2026 Assembly election and kept Nowda. The Election Commission announced the bypoll on September 7. His son, Golam Nabi Azad, contested on the AJUP ticket.
