Gobindapur, Murshidabad: At least four people, including three schoolchildren, were killed and four others sustained critical injuries after a local train collided with a school van at the Gobindapur railway level crossing in Murshidabad district on Friday morning. The accident took place between Karnasubarna railway station and the Gobindapur rail gate on the Azimganj–Katwa railway section.
According to railway and local officials, the school van was carrying students to school when it attempted to cross the level crossing. It was struck by an oncoming local train, leaving the vehicle severely damaged. Three students died in the collision, along with a local resident. Four other occupants suffered serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, where their condition was reported to be critical.
The impact of the collision drew hundreds of residents to the accident site. Rescue operations were launched immediately by local people, police, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP), and railway officials. The injured were pulled out of the mangled vehicle and shifted to hospital in ambulances.
The tragedy has plunged the entire Gobindapur area into mourning. Parents and local residents gathered near the crossing, many demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the accident. Questions have also been raised about safety measures at the railway crossing and whether adequate precautions were in place at the time of the collision.
Railway authorities and district officials have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Officials are expected to examine eyewitness accounts, the functioning of the level crossing, and whether all mandatory safety protocols were followed before the van entered the tracks.

The identities of the deceased and injured are yet to be officially released. Authorities said further details would be shared after informing the victims’ families.
